Avengers vs Black Order 19/09/21

Howdy all.

So this is the second of the game reports I did from this day, the other being the Dark Dimension v Web Warriors.

For this game I was playing vs another local player called Paul. I know Paul from the Warmachine meta and have been trying to get a game with him at MCP for a few weeks now, and our schedules finally lined up.

I was continuing my forray with Avengers Sam Spam and Dark Dimension and I've not played against Black Order for a long time so was keen to see how this would go. Again, I didn't take enough damn pics. I need to write it on piece of paper and stick it to my side of the table I think to remember.

We roll for priory and Paul wins.

Avengers:

Captain America (Sam Wilson), Iron Fist, Vision, Black Widow, Domino.

TTCs: Medpack, Bitter Rivals, Avengers Assemble, Heroes for Hire, Advanced R&D

Black Order:

Thanos with the Mind Stone, Corvus with the Reality Stone and Proxima Midnight.

TTCs: Advanced R&D, Field Dressing, Brace for Impact, Execute, Mothership

Game Setup/Deployment:

Extraction:
Panic Grips City as Evacuation Efforts Continue

Secure: Gamma Wave Sweeps Across Midwest.

Threat: 15

As before, Paul won priority and chose 15 threat. I chose Panic but in hindsight it wasn't the best idea as we had the lower threat. I did have a couple of list ideas with Dormammu, Iron Fist and Vision and, again, in hindsight maybe they would have been the better choice. I was really unsure what my plan would be here. I intensely dislike Gamma and how it makes the game go.

Paul deploys first with Proxima (beside the building on the upper left), Thanos and Corvus. I counter deploy Vision, Domino, Sam, Iron Fist and Black Widow (from left to right).

Round One:

Paul starts with a pass.

Domino double moves and picks up the citizen on the left.

Paul passes again.

Black Widow moves and picks up the citizen token on the right then moves back into within 2 of the Gamma Shelter.

Proxima moves and picks up her citizen and then moves toward the centre of the board.

Vision double moves onto the shelter nearest me.

Corvus moves and picks up the last citizen then moves onto the centre shelter.

Sam moves forward and attacks Corvus for 1 damage and pushes him backwards S.

Thanos walks forward twice then uses the Mind Stone to move Sam forward and away from the shelters.

Iron Fist walks and attacks Thanos for 1 damage and places beside him. I then play Avengers Assemble to move Sam to the middle shelter.

During the clean up phase Domino and Proxima take 1 damage from the crisis.

Round ends 2 - 5 to me.

Round Two:

This time Paul doesn't pass and gets stuck right in. Proxima attacks Sam for 1 damage and applies Poison and places next to him. She then attacks again for 2 damage and triggers the ability to activate Corvus.

Corvus attacks Sam. I play Heroes for Hire and place Iron Fist. Thanos chucks in a Deaths Decreee for good measure and with some spicey defence dice I only take 1 damage and throw Corvus away. He then moves back in from the trigger. He strikes Sam again for 2 damage and dazes. I trigger the leadership ability to heal Iron Fist 1 damage.

Vision uses his beam attack on Corvus and Proxima doing 2 and 1 damage respectively. He then moves down to the centre objective and throws Thanos towards the left of the table.

Paul passes.

Iron Fist double attacks Corvus but only does a mediocre 1 damage to the Black Order member.

Paul passes.

Domino double attacks Corvus for 1 damage.

Thanos walks back the middle and uses the Mind Stone on Vision (irony) and moves him away. He attacks Domino for 1 damage and throws her into the nearby truck. He then teleports Iron Fist.

Black Widow moves onto the bottom shelter and takes a pistol shot at Corvus but does 0 damage.

During the cleanup phase Iron Fist, Vision and Domino take 1 damage from the crisis.

Round ends 6 - 8 to me.

Round 3:

Corvus attacks Sam with the added Deaths Decreee to KO him, scoring a VP and making the score 7 - 8 to me. Sam's leadership triggers and Domino heals 1 damage and moves further away from combat. Corvus then flurries into Black Widow and dazes her, causing her to drop her citizen. He finishes off with an attack into Vision causing 4 damage, teleporting his citizen out for 2 VPs making it 9 - 8 to Paul. Corvus triggers his ability to then activate Proxima.

Proxima walks toward Domino and attacks her, but only manages to cause 1 damage.

Vision moves and picks up the dropped citizen and immediately teleports it out to make it 9 - 10 to me. Domino plays Advanced R&D to give a power to Vision who then medpacks himself. Vision beams Corvus and does a damage to daze him.

Thanos attacks Vision for 0 damage. He follows up with another attack for 2 damage, throwing him into a nearby building for a further 1 damage. He then teleports Proxima back to the bottom shelter.

Domino teleports out her civilian to make it 9 - 12 to me. She then walks twice to contest the middle shelter with Thanos.

In the cleanup phase Vision takes a damage from the crisis and gets dazed.

Round ends 13 - 12 to Paul.

Round 4:

Thanos uses Advanced R&D to give a power to his two companions. Corvus attacks Widow with the added Deaths Decree and KOs the injured Avenger scoring Paul a VP to make it 14 - 12 to him. He then forgoes his flurry to then activate Proxima.

Proxima teleports out her civilian to score 2 VPs for Paul to make it 16 - 12.

Game ends 16 - 12 to Paul.

Fun game and I felt a little closer than the score maybe showed. Ultimately I just can't tank the kind of damage that Corvus was throwing at me, the man is a machine. In hindsight I think the Dormammu/ Iron Fist/ Vision list may have fated better, I'd like to have seen Thanos go up against Dormammu in the middle. Again, Gamma is deffo one of my least enjoyed scenarios. I feel it turns the game into a scrummash in the middle of the board and you get funnelled into this brawl in the middle. Losing Sam early didn't help either, I played him too aggressive and didn't really respect the kind of damage Black Order can do. Paul played the right game, made the right calls and choices and didn't give away many, if any, mistakes for me to capitalise on. Definitely gave me a bit more to think about should I come up against Black Order again in the future.
