Avengers v Criminal Syndicate 28/03/21

Avengers - Captain America, Wolverine, AntMan, Okye, Valkyrie, Hawkeye
TTCs - Avengers Assemble, MedPack, Second Wind, Bitter Rivals, X-ceptional Healing

Criminal Syndicate - KingPin, MODOK, Enchantress, Taskmaster, Valkyrie
TTCs - Brace for Impact, MedPack, Bitter Rivals, Hired Muscle, Disarm

Objectives - Gamma Wave Sweeps Across Midwest, Panic Grips City as Evacuation Efforts Continue.

For this game I decided to fall back onto the Avengers, I had some stuff I wanted to try on the scenario and with Avengers having access to a lot of good 3 and 4 cost characters I thought it might work. If I had lost Gamma Shelters on the random card discard I might have gone with Asgard instead for this.

Game Prep.

Continuing the usual run of form Adam wins priority again and choses the Extraction leaving me with the Secure. He decides on 19 threat, which I wasn't expecting. I did expect Adam to go for the 15 point level as in the past I usually go for the higher points level and Adam the mid to low level.

Adam deploys first with Taskmaster at the top behind the building followed by Kingpin, Modok, Enchantress and Valkyrie. I counter deploy Hawkeye, Wolverine, Cap, Antman, Valkryie and Okoye.

Turn 1:

I figured this was going to be a hard match up. With Kingpins leadership ability Criminal Syndicate are the ideal choice for Gamma Shelters, forcing me to put 2 of my own for every 1 of Adams to contest objectives. Having 6 team members does give me a little bit of flexibility but Im not sure if itll be enough.

Adam moves Valkyrie forwards first in a double move then plays Bitter Rivals to move my civilian token closer to herself, and the civilian token at Adams side closer to Enchantress. Valkyrie then picks up the token that was originally closer to me.
I decide to keep it with a straight forward activation and activate Hawkeye. He walks forward, picks up the civilian token the moves back around behind the car.
Taskmaster moves forward, picks up the civilian token, then moves up and climbs on top of the bus shelter, just out of range of the centre gamma shelter.
Captain America keeps the cagey play going by moving forward to my Gamma Shelter and doing nothing with his second action.
Kingpin double moves to the centre shelter, something I knew was likely to happen but hoped wouldnt, forcing my play.
Okoye moves up behind the delorian and fires a spear blast at Valkyrie, squeezing through 2 damage.
Modok moves forward and picks up the civilian token that Adam moved towards Enchantress earlier on.
Valkyrie, on my side, moves forward then charges KingPin for 3 damage. Putting her within contesting range of the centre shelter. She follows up by throwing a lampost at the criminal leader but causes 0 damage.
Adam decides to use his pass.
Wolverine double moves to the objective in the middle to contest with Valkyrie.
Enchantress double walks onto the back shelter then uses sirens call to walk Wolverine away from the centre objective.
AntMan has the final activation of the turn and uses Avengers Assemble. Cap, AntMan, Wolverine all spend a power to move S. Cap and Wolverine move up to the centre shelter whilst AntMan moves onto the objective near my board edge then transforms into tiny Antman.

Turn ends 4 - 4

Turn 2:

Okoye, Taskmaster, Valkyrie (Adam's) and Hawkeye all take 1 damage from being out of range of a Gamma Shelter.

Kingpin decides to go first, and Valkyrie spends 3 power to drop Bitter Rivals on Captain America. The then attacks Wolverine for a mighty 4 damage and follows it up by throwing him into my Valkyrie, causing 1 more damage to Wolverine and 2 damage to Valkyrie whilst also applying stagger to Wolverine. He attacks the mutant again but causes 0 damage but does push him away.
Wolverine has to go next, due to his damage situation. He shakes stagger then uses Best At What I Do to move back towards Kingpin and make his slash attack which manages to score 4 damage on Kingpin dazing him. He then medpacks himself and heals 2 automatic damage from his healing ability at the end of his activation.
Modok warms up and attacks Wolverine but only manages to push through 2 damage. He then uses Doomsday Chair on Valkyrie but doesnt do any damage, the second attack from the chair hits Wolverine for 5 damage but he plays X-Ceptional healing to reduce the damage to 1. Both Valkyrie and Wolverine suffer bleed from the attack.
Hawkeye moves up and shoots Taskmaster but fails to do any damage, he then uses a hook arrow to move onto the rear Gamma Shelter.
Enchantress double attacks Wolverine and Valkyrie with her beam attack. She does 4 damage to Wolverine and dazes him and 2 damage to the Asgardian. She then uses sirens call to walk Valkyrie away from the shelter.
Valkyrie clears bleed so she doesnt just instantly die. She charges Taskmaster for 4 damage, following up with a flurry for 0 damage. Taskmaster uses his counter attack ability to plink Valkyrie for 1 damage and dazes her.
Taskmaster medpacks himself then walks towards the rear objective, climbing onto the truck to make sure he is in scoring range.
Okoye decides on a risky double attack strategy on Valkyrie and double spear blasts her at -1 dice due to Bitter Rivals. The attacks is successful, partly due to Adams bad dice rolls, and it dazes Valkyrie. She drops the civilian token which Okoye picks up.
AntMan stays where he is, more or less forfeiting both of his actions.
Captain America ends the turn by double shield throwing at Enchantress and Taskmaster, doing 2 damage to the Asgardian and 4 damage to Taskmaster.

Turn ends  7 - 9 to me.

Turn 3:

Okoye takes 1 damage due to being out of range of a shelter.

Modok opens the turn by attacking Wolverine, which Captain America bodyguards and takes 2 damage. The floating villain tries again but it is once again bodyguarded by Cap for a further 2 damage to the Avenger leader. He vents his fury by throwing a nearby bus stop at the injured Avenger but fails to cause any more damage.
Wolverine decides to go next and uses the Best At What I Do to do 4 damage and bleed Kingpin. He then uses a berserker barrage to do a further 2 damage to the enemy leader, throwing him at Enchantress which Adam uses Brace for Impact on.
Kingpin moves back towards the centre, attacking Wolverine with a Hail to the King for 0 damage, throwing him at Valkyrie for 1 damage to the mutant and 4 damage to the Asgardian.
Okoye double walks over to the rear Shelter.
Enchantress moves both Cap and Valkyrie; the former towards the statue and the latter towards the shelter. She then walks up and beam attacks catching both targets. The damage KOs Valkyrie and dazes Cap.
Hawkeye moves up, shoots and KOs Kingpin then hooks back to the rear Gamma Shelter.
AntMan finally decides to get involved in the fight and moves forward, then hitches a ride to get placed beside Enchantress. He throws an ant sized uppercut at the Agardian and forces through 4 damage and transforms to regular size. He ends his activation by transforming back to tiny size.
Valkyrie charges AntMan for 2 damage. She then follows up with a Warrior of Legend and Dragon Fang and rolls insanely well, roughly 9 successes and does the 3 damage to daze the tiny Avenger.

Turn ends 10 - 14 to me.

Turn 4:

Wolverine starts the turn off and goes full berserker on Enchantress, paying the 2 power to overcome her Mystic defence and KOs the enemy. He then uses the Best At What I Do to move and attack Valkyrie and also KOs her.
Taskmaster pays 6 power to teleport his civilian token out of the battle scoring an instant 2 VPs and taking the score to 12 - 14 to me. He then throws his shield at Wolverine for 0 damage.
AntMan moves up. hitches a ride on top of the truck beside Taskmaster, uppercutting and dazing the Criminal hitman. The attack causes him to transform to regular size, and Antman spends the power to transform to small size again which allows him to drop down behind the truck and remaining in range of the objective.
Modok attacks Wolverine but again can only get 1 damage on the Avenger, he attacks again and again only gets 1 damage. He ends his activation by moving AntMan away from the top objective.

At this point we called it. Adam couldn't win as I still had Cap, Hawkeye and Okoye to activate. We worked out Cap would move to the centre shelter, Hawkeye could get to the shelter by Adams edge and Okoye would score my shelter.

Game ends 12 - 22 to me.

Well, I was pleased at getting a win after a long run of defeats. I felt I played the scenario well, I was forced to try and take Kingpin down to stop the Syndicate having such a huge advantage. Once again Wolverine performed amazing as he does when Ive played him before. I feel this is more down to being really hot with dice more than what Wolverine actually does. Taking down Enchantress and Valkyrie at the start of turn 4 was huge. During the course of the game we did notice Adams luck was definitely against him; rolling low for attacks and rolling badly for defence. Whereas when I was rolling damage I wasn't really doing chip damage, and was more like chunk damage.
I'm a little torn on Gamma Shelters. Whilst I recognise its strength as a scenario, especially for Criminal Syndicate, I feel it turns an objective based strategy game into a centre of the board, centre-line brawl fest where melee brutes - like Kingpin and Wolverine - shine. Its something I'll consider when making up my list next time and whether I want to keep it in my scenario selections.
