MCP Monthly Mayhem, ProTech Games 20-02-2022

Hey folks :-)

Welcome back. Feels like I don't post here as much anymore, which is prob a bit true seeing as most of the batreps I do now go via the Midlife Crisis Protocol YouTube channel. But I like to keep this blog around to document my foray into the UK MCP gaming scene :-) Its taken a bit longer to post this event rep up, unfortunately life has a habit of getting in the way sometimes.

So this event took me down the M6 and subsequent A66 to Stockton-on-Tees, more specifically to yet ANOTHER gaming store I hadn't heard of til lately. It appears the UK has gaming venues a plenty. This event was being held at ProTech Games. The event had a great turn out of 15 people if I remember right, which is a great showing for their first MCP gathering.

Great store and very easy to find, situated on the outskirts of Stockton so no need to mess around trying to drive through town centres and the like and right by the major motorway. Loads of space for gaming and nice and bright too. The tables in use for the event were fantastically decorated and to a high standard. No pressure for my own future events then ;-) The staff were all really friendly and helpful and overall it's a great store and well worth a visit, they also have an online store here if you fancy a wee browse :-)

Roster Composition.

So as you can see definitely a big take away from my usual Avengers or Web Warriors lists....we don't talk about Inhumans. As I've said on the channel and in my blog I wanted to move to Brotherhood of Mutants when the new stuff came out so I did just that. But randomly, the day before this event, Adam and I recorded a game and I used Wakanda and thoroughly enjoyed them. I wondered if I could make a control type roster mixed with a heavy hitter type roster and this was the outcome. I'll go over each character briefly.

Black Panther: leader of the Wakandans and a model I've come to think of as "control tank". Pushes in both attacks, great defensive stats and tech, and the leadership ability is still fantastic.

Okoye: a return of my loyal bodyguard. Since she got changed I haven't used her as much, not because she is bad, but because models like Bullseye and Toad have more compelling reasons to be taken instead. I have no doubt she will shine as she does for me.

Shuri: a character I didn't really use much prior to the big update in November. Her range 5 push still affects like 90% of the characters in the game and her rerolls are still incredibly useful.

Killmonger: the heavy hitter of Wakanda in my eyes. His Usurp card can literally change the dynamic of a game and in the past I've found to never underestimate what he can do in combat.

Magneto: leader of the Brotherhood and arguably my favourite MCP leader/character. I wanted him for situations where I terrain may be on my side or for high threat games on stuff like gamma shetlers.

Mystique: second leader of Brotherhood although I rarely use her for that. Her deception card is amazing and her reactive denial tech is legitimately scary AF.

Toad: as I said before Toad has even more compelling reasons to be in any roster. A great scenario piece and has a push which can sometimes be clutch.

Rogue: where do I start with Rogue..she may be the new Medusa. She does everything; flies, throws, damage reducer, power steal, good defensive stats, etc. With access to either Magneto powering her up or Black Panther giving her rerolls she doesn't have a bad place.

Gambit: I said when I saw Gambit that he works best anywhere but xmen and I still stand by that. He is a fantastic 3 cost character and with Magneto he would get the power he needs to do his job.

Juggernaut: the big man himself. I've had a lot of good work with Juggernaut since his rules were made available. Very hard to dislodge and incredibly mobile he works well in both Brotherhood and Wakanda.

Tactics Cards:

I'm not going to go over all my choices. Some, like patch up, wakanda forever, etc are fairly obvious.

Mind if I cut in?: I like the idea of this card, using Rogue as a pseudo taunting machine to help in some risky situations.

Charming Thief: like a lesser version of the Soul Stone for Gambit. Used on the right turn it really can solve all his power requirements.

Indomitable: I think this is an amazing card and arguably one of the strongest to come out of the new boxes. It's like brace but can be used on pushes as well. Used at the right moment can be huge.

Crisis Selection:

My crisis selection was unfortunately a little last minute so I stuck to scenarios that I knew to play really like Hammers and Infinity Formula etc. I threw in the new Super Powered Scoundrels scenario as I like it, and a secure on F makes thinks nice and close meaning I don't need to spread out as much. Wakandan herb is in there as a) I have Wakanda and they're quite good for it, and b) juggernaut is a good model for scoring this scenario due to his mobility.

Round One v Percy Purifpr. Wakanda v Brotherhood of Mutants.
Secure - Riots
Extract - Wakandan Herb

My first game was vs a new face and a relatively newish player to MCP. Playing Brotherhood as well which was awesome, as I love Magneto. Due to the scenarios involved I went with Wakanda for this. The game was great fun but the scenario was a slow scoring one. I had a particularly strong turn when Killmonger went fuego on both Magneto and Mystique dazing both and scoring me the Usurp points. I eventually managed to get the herb to my side of the board and went on to win 16-5.

Round Two v Will Spencer. Brotherhood v Midnight Sons.
Secure - Intrusion Portals
Extract - Hammers

Next round another new face :-) this time against Will. Will was playing Midnight Sons which I also quite enjoy, but when I saw the table and the terrain I knew I wanted to play Magneto. Magneto ended up in the middle of the board and basically proceeded to throw almost the entire centre of the board at my opponent across the game. It was quite back and forth to begin with but I managed to pull ahead and win 16-6.

Round Three Vs Anthony Poole. Brotherhood v Guardians.
Extract - Hammers
Secure - Intrusion Portals

My next opponent was Anthony. I've played Anthony twice before at other venues and had two close victories. A lovely opponent and always happy to play him :-) with the terrain I decided to go with Magneto again, and given the mirror scenario from the last round I felt confident. I am aware how good guardians are, and given that Anthony is also a very good player I knew I was in for a tight game. As expect the game was incredibly tight, with Anthony however able to maintain a narrow lead. The game ended up going to time with Anthony winning 17-14, but could have potentially been a draw if I had more time. Great game though :-)

Round Four vs Paul Davis. Wakanda v Avengers.
Extract - Research Station
Secure - Gamma Shelters

My last opponent of the day was the lovely Paul Davis playing Avengers with Steve. I fell back onto Wakanda to give me an even 2 games each with both factions, and given that one scenario was Gamma I wanted to give them a test into it. It was an incredibly fun game and I got a good feel for the control elements of Wakanda with 2 scenarios that can go my way with the right timed pushes. I managed to win the game 21-10 in the end, but I feel the scoreline didn't really reflect that the game itself was quite close til the last turn.

In Conclusion....

Great event and I will definitely be back for another one. Maybe not in March due to work but definitely for other months. :-)

After all the scores were settled I went 3 - 1 and finished second and I am thoroughly thrilled with that. Mike East finished 1st and Anthony Poole finished 3rd. The link to the longshanks event is here for those interested in a look.

In regards to my list selection I was pleasantly surprised. I felt both affiliations did what I wanted them to do on the scenarios they were on. I've always liked Brotherhood and since the new stuff came out they've only gotten better, and Wakanda is still a strong affiliation even though you don't see them as much as you used to. Hopefully that'll change :-)

Next up for me, I'm not sure. There's a bunch of events in March but my work is very busy so not a lot of free weekends. I'm hopeful going to make it back to Board in Brum on the 5th March if I can wangle it with work, fingers crossed for me :-)

Take it easy folks :-)
